Free basics illusion

What ‘free basics’ ideally seeks
1. Digital equity
2. Access to education, jobs, news etc. for billion Indians

On digging through facebook’s developer guide I found the following.
1. Facebook’s free basics supports both smart phones and feature phones (read those small screen phones which have virtually unusable browsers)
2. Websites need to be developed in such a way that feature phones are supported, yeah well lets go back to 90s
3. All the traffic will be routed through internet.org servers so that ISPs can zero rate your service
4. Facebook can truncate videos, images. Basically morph your site. Read stalking, censorship.

Now considering what they are offering and what they want in return the scales are not equal. Free basics is just a medium to get more people online and familiar with Facebook and off course in turn Facebook knows them literally. None of the already shady government sites would work on free basics, talk about fucking digital equity. Free basics is canabalizing the internet and so will others bigshots given a free hand. Forget open standards, open sources. I don’t subscribe to the notion “something is better than nothing” there are always costs, costs we are not aware of and that is even worse.
